JSH: That was fun!!!

That previous post was a hoot and a holler. And you know? I think many of you who think you are so brilliantly trained taking math classes have no clue what it's like to be trained as a scientist.

I have determined that many of you believe that convincing people is important.

In contrast I, as hopefully many scientists also do, believe that convincing people is secondary.

First and foremost is determining the truth.

I think that modern mathematicians are, sadly, trained—first and foremost to be convincing.

So you miss out. You have no clue about what is all the joy in discovery, or what is the point of the pain in the process at getting to the truth.

Instead you learn formats to be convincing. Ways to sound like you know what you're presenting.

And all the ways you need to know to write up some argument so that it sounds like it's a proof.

But is it really a proof?

You only care if you can convince others that it is a proof.

So no matter what, you people are lost on an excitement you can't comprehend, and on a fascination and drive that is beyond you, which is the drive that pushes some people to find the truth, wherever it leads them.

You are lost souls so close to heaven, but incapable of ever seeing it, because in your world, heaven is approval from a group of flawed human beings.

But in my world, the truth is all that matters.

Because I am a scientist.
